A Story Carved in Sacrifice and Survival

The heart of Just A Marine lies in the jungles of Vietnam. Kohn, a member of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines—infamously nicknamed "The Walking Dead"—recounts the harrowing ambush that left him and one other as the sole survivors of a 36-man patrol. For 58 days, he fought through injury, starvation, and the unrelenting unknown to make his way back to camp. He earned the Purple Heart—but wore it not with bravado, only with quiet honor.

As readers follow Kohn’s decades-long journey—from combat patrols to training the next generation of Young Marines—what emerges is a portrait of a man with grit, integrity, and an undying belief in service over self. His story is filled with warmth, wit, and wisdom gained not just on the battlefield, but in every hallway and handshake at the Parris Island Museum, where he worked post-retirement sharing Marine history with new recruits and civilians alike.

About the Author:

Aulton Kohn, retired Gunnery Sergeant, USMC, is a decorated Vietnam War veteran, former SWAT team leader, and lifelong Marine who dedicated over 42 years to service—first in combat, then in training, mentoring, and public education. His military record includes the Purple Heart, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and ten other distinguished honors.

Following active duty, he continued to serve his country through his leadership of the Parris Island Young Marines Program and as a beloved figure at the Parris Island Museum. His legacy lives on not only in the Marines he trained, but in the lives of countless youth and families he mentored.
