This procedure, successfully used on numerous patients, exemplifies Dr. Hauer-Jensen's impact on patient care and his status as a leading surgeon.
As a radiation researcher, Dr. Hauer-Jensen has focused on the effects of radiation on normal tissues, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. His research has received funding from such influential institutions as the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Agency.

He is working on a radioprotector called Gamma Tocotrienol, which is nearing FDA approval. He also hopes to see the Division of Radiation Health he founded at UAMS continue to grow and prosper.
When he is ready to fully retire, Dr. Hauer-Jensen plans to continue enjoying his hobbies, including traveling, wine tasting, golf and stamp collecting.
