As Americans Continue to Battle Inflation, New Report Finds Consumers Spend $1,275 Per Year on Mobile Phone Services, up 10% From Last Year

doxo reveals that Americans spend a total of $166 billion a year on mobile phone services; new report breaks down the most expensive states and cities for mobile phone usage in the U.S.

doxo, the innovative web and mobile bill pay service, today released its U.S. Mobile Phone Market Size and Household Spending Report for 2022, revealing a 10% growth year over year in the amount consumers pay for mobile phone services. doxoINSIGHTS’ statistical analysis of actual household payments toward mobile phones across 97% of U.S. zip codes helps to size the overall market, revealing that Americans spend $166 billion annually on mobile phone services. The report also found that 94% of U.S. households with a Mobile Phone bill spend $113 per month, or $1,356 per year – which equates to $1,275* per year when averaging across all U.S. households. The report breaks out the U.S. household spending market size; percentage of households that pay each bill; and average monthly and annual bill pay costs by state, largest metro areas and cities based on population.

With inflation hitting historic highs this year, some of the world’s largest mobile carriers have succumbed to price hikes, with some even adding new fees (such as an “economic adjustment charge” or additional administrative charges) to their services to try and combat inflation. Compared with doxo’s 2021 analysis of the 149 billion Mobile Phone market (finding consumers pay $103 per month, $1,159 per year*), 94% of American households that have this bill have shown a 10% increase in how much they spend monthly.

“Months of record-breaking inflation have left consumers with climbing household bills across nearly every type of bill,” said Jim Kreyenhagen, VP of Marketing and Consumer Services at doxo. “Through doxoINSIGHTS, we are able to uncover the broadest and most transparent data available on actual household spending for the most common bills. Our most recent report reveals the steep increase that consumers are facing when it comes to paying their mobile phone bills, a 10% jump from this time last year. In the modern day mobile era where nearly every American household has a mobile phone bill to pay, it’s crucial that we arm consumers with transparent data and the tools to manage their bills so they can budget accordingly and ultimately improve their financial health.”
