Calorify Bolsters Commercialization of Doubly Labeled Water Test by Welcoming Clinical, Obesity and Diabetes Expert Dr. Justin Ryder to Its Advisory Board

Calorify, the producer of the world's most accurate measure of energy expenditure, today announced the appointment of Justin Ryder, Ph.D., as a Clinical Research Advisor to support the company as it commercializes and further innovates its doubly labeled water (DLW) metabolic rate test. Calorify’s DLW test is a transformative measure of energy expenditure that could help uncover data-driven treatments for common, life-threatening metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes.

Dr. Ryder holds appointments at Northwestern and Lurie Children’s Hospital. For the last three years, Dr. Ryder relied on data from DLW tests to ensure his clinical trials included the most accurate metabolism and expenditure data. He is currently working with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on obesity trials. At Calorify, Dr. Ryder will advise on research and development, evaluating and implementing customer feedback, market needs and the latest clinical trial trends for Calorify’s DLW offering. Calorify’s customers - ranging from pharmaceutical and biotech companies to sports/athletic companies to researchers across various industries - will benefit from Dr. Ryder’s scientific expertise of DLW in the clinical trial space.

“As an obesity scientist, I fully understand the importance and value of better metabolic rate testing and the impact it can have on fighting obesity,” said Dr. Justin Ryder, vice chair of research for the Department of Surgery, Lurie Children's Hospital and associate professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “Information is not only power – in this case, it’s better healthcare decision-making. Calorify’s breakthrough in DLW testing enables DLW to be used in clinical trials, and directly by healthcare professionals, to provide accurate, accessible assessments of metabolism and energy expenditure.”

“This is a year of big growth for Calorify - from partnerships to fundraising to adding to our team of experts - all in an effort to help guide researchers with more accurate metabolic input and output data, made possible by doubly labeled water. Dr. Ryder will be a valuable asset to the Calorify team as we build partnerships across the healthcare spectrum,” said Hari Mix, chief executive officer and founder, Calorify. “Dr. Ryder is a phenomenal scientist with an impressive portfolio of work in physiology and medicine. He will play a pivotal role at Calorify as we continue to serve our pharmaceutical, biotech and research customers.”

About Calorify

Calorify is the first lab to commercialize precise metabolic rate measurements using the doubly labeled water method. While the science has existed for over 40 years, tests were limited to those participating in academic research. Calorify’s lab quantitatively measures how much CO₂ an individual produces to measure calories in a real-world setting. It aims to democratize one of the most critical data points about the human body. Calorify's focus has been on reducing the cost of DLW to make it more available to academic institutions, biotechnology companies, and pharmaceutical companies. With its customizable protocol, Calorify’s high throughput lab can deliver quality results quickly to institutional clients.
