Recently, renowned health data scientist Dr. Weilong Li from AscentGene interpreted knowledge on population health management in the media, garnering widespread attention from the public.
Dr. Weilong Li:Health as People’s Most Valuable Asset
Health is a unique form of wealth—one that doesn’t require too much hustle or complex strategies to build. It's already within people’s grasp; it just needs their attention and care to flourish.
As the world evolves, so does people’s need for improved health, pushing governments to expand investments in healthcare across all fronts—medical services, health management, pharmaceuticals, and insurance. Yet amid this booming growth, population health remains a relatively niche field of study. While not always in the spotlight, population health is vital to creating effective healthcare systems that tackle issues at their roots.
In this sharing, audiences sit down with Dr. Weilong Li, a visionary in population health, as he shares insights into this field and its potential to transform public health worldwide.
A Journey Built on Curiosity and Purpose
- 2015: Dr. Li began his academic journey at the University of Pennsylvania, pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Policy.
- 2016: He joined the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development, where he gained hands-on experience through work and internships.
- 2017: Returning to the University of Pennsylvania, he added a Master’s Degree in Statistics and Demography to his credentials.
- 2018: At the UN Population Division, he spearheaded a project analyzing the impact of population aging on global demographics over the next five decades.
- 2019: Dr. Li conducted field research in Malawi, gathering valuable longitudinal survey data.
- 2022: He earned a joint Ph.D. in Demography and Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Why Research Population Health?
Growing up amidst rapid urbanization, Dr. Li observed profound societal changes. While economic growth surged, so did environmental damage, an aging population due to declining fertility rates, and a decline in public health linked to changes in lifestyle and diet. These early observations fueled his passion for population health.
When asked about his choice, Dr. Li shared:
“When people study health through the point of view of common people, they can understand the social roots of their current health issues. Population health goes beyond simply examining health problems; it reveals patterns and causes that influence everything from policy to healthcare delivery. Population health research shows people how social and cultural factors shape the health of individuals and communities, giving them a clearer view of the challenges in their healthcare systems. My dedication to improving public health is what drew me to this field.”
This guiding vision led Dr. Li to focus his research on health challenges faced by rural-to-urban migrants in China, Indonesia, and Malawi. His work sheds light on the social factors behind health disparities, offering key insights for public health strategies in developing nations—and even in immigrant-rich countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia, where diverse populations face unique health challenges.
Applying Knowledge for Global Health
After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Li turned his focus to Real-World Evidence (RWE), a research approach that steps outside the workroom to study treatments in everyday life. Unlike traditional randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which operate under controlled conditions, RWE draws insights from real clinical settings, providing a fuller picture of how treatments perform. Dr. Li views this real-world research as a powerful way to improve public health, offering a clearer understanding of treatment safety and effectiveness. This method can enhance the drug development process, provide a more comprehensive understanding of treatment safety, and improve how medications are applied in clinical practice. For Dr. Li, RWE is more than an academic interest—it is a tool to drive meaningful public health improvements.
With a strong foundation in population health and data analysis, Dr. Li has quickly emerged as a leader in the RWE field. At Analysis Group, his data-driven studies on medication usage uncovered substantial variations in treatment costs and timelines across different drug combinations, even when outcomes were similar. His work sparked a shift in how people evaluate drug effectiveness, demonstrating RWE’s value in optimizing patient care. Later, as a health data scientist at AscentGene, Dr. Li led the data analytics of pharmacological research on a variety of diseases, including glioma, non-small cell lung cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. His outstanding work has been pivotal in advancing groundbreaking medications that have since made a significant impact on global health.
Pushing Population Health Forward with Technology
Dr. Li’s innovations continue to push population health research into new territories. Two of his most well-known standout achievements include, Intelligent Analysis System for Resident Health Data Based on Hybrid Expert Systems and, the Aging Economy Analysis Software Based on Synthetic Clustering Algorithm.
The Intelligent Analysis System for Resident Health Data Based on Hybrid Expert Systems, one of Dr. Li’s most significant innovations, consolidates health information from multiple sources and applies sophisticated data cleaning and integration techniques to ensure accuracy and reliability. This system analyzes health trends at both the individual and population levels, taking into account factors like geography, occupation, and socio-economic status. This tool has become invaluable for shaping public health policies and allocating healthcare resources more efficiently.
In addition to his research, Dr. Li plays an active role in the academic community, serving as a peer reviewer for leading sociology journals, including the International Journal of Social Science Studies and Asian Social Science. Through these contributions, he supports the growth of new scholars while maintaining high standards in the field.
Facing Global Health Challenges Head-On with Population Health
With aging populations, emerging health threats, and the long-lasting effects of pandemics, there’s an urgent need for population health research. Dr. Li remains committed to advancing this field, developing models that prioritize patient-centered care while addressing the social, economic, and cultural factors that shape people’s current health. His research offers crucial guidance for policy, pharmaceutical development, and healthcare systems, helping them to address the world’s diverse and complex health needs.
Dr. Li’s work is a testament to the power of research in transforming healthcare strategies. By translating insights into practical solutions, his research helps drive public health improvements, guiding policy and supporting healthcare innovations tailored to today’s complex health challenges.
