“I wrote Liv’s Secrets with deep emotion to capture not only the harsh realities of apartheid, but the love, courage, and personal sacrifice at the center of one woman’s fight for change,” says author Janet Levine. “The Weisz family’s journey unfolds alongside South Africa’s own, beautiful, turbulent, and transformative, as generations navigate love, loss, betrayal, and hope.”

Real historical figures intersect with the fictional cast as world wars, political unrest, and rising racial tensions reshape the nation. The Sharpeville massacre of March 1960 becomes a pivotal turning point, one that alters both South Africa’s trajectory and the fate of the Weisz family.

From this moment forward, the novel centers on Liv Weisz, a passionate, newly divorced woman who answers the call to join the resistance against the apartheid government. Her decision, born of conscience and fierce conviction, comes at an unimaginable cost.

Levine says, “Liv is a character like no other. Her journey reveals the sacrifices ordinary people make in the fight against injustice and the far-reaching consequences that shape countless lives. Smart, brave, and bold, Liv embodies the resilience and courage at the heart of this story.”

“When I started reading Liv's Secrets, the history fascinated me, but soon I felt invested in the characters… The descriptions of South Africa's many landscapes made clear that the country was another complex and beloved character in this story. A great read.”

“I love historical fiction IF it is well done — and this novel is very well done! The saga tells an important story as it follows the Weisz family through several generations in South Africa. Levine's characters rang true for me… I am on my second read and loving it again.”
