Plans for Natural Gas Facility in Plaquemines Parish Analyzed by NOLA Plumbers

New Orleans, Louisiana based National Economy Plumbers analyzes a highly disputed planned natural gas facility in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana

A planned natural gas facility in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, which was poised to be the most expensive in the world and employ 400, has been sparking major concerns since the concept’s inception, notably due to the fact that it was scheduled to be built less than 30 miles from downtown New Orleans near Myrtle Grove. Several New Orleans-based plumbing services companies, including National Economy Plumbers, are sharing their thoughts on the project, being touted as the largest and most expensive liquefied natural gas plant in the U.S.

“Some of Louisiana’s largest environmental watchdog agencies and activists have taken notice of this natural gas facility’s progress, and we felt it was in our customers’ best interests to, as well,” states National Economy Plumbers’ David Howard. “With renowned environmentalists like Wilma Subra - who used to chair the EPA’s environmental justice council - weighing in, we felt it prudent to point out how the people of New Orleans don’t really know what is going on with all of this. Take, for example, the fact that the construction of the $21 billion plant will ultimately end with the shipment of liquefied natural gas all over the world, how pipelines from across the south will send natural gas to the facility - less than 40 minutes from downtown New Orleans - and how it will ultimately be turned into a liquid, making it lighter and easier to be transported by cargo ship…to places pipelines do not reach.”

NOLA plumbing company owners like Howard have noted that while all of this looks like a profitable business model, there are a number of safety concerns citizens should be aware of. Further, many of National Economy’s customers that have been told about the plant have been reportedly surprised by the news, saying they weren’t even aware that this is happening “just down the river.” All of this comes on the heels of an explosion that occurred at a liquefied natural gas site in Texas, spurring what businesses like National Economy are calling “justified concerns.”

“The question we keep going back to is this: the sign says ‘Clean Air, Justice Sustainability’ - but does this plant provide any of that?,” adds Howard. “Some of the plumber experts we’ve talked to, in fact, suggest that most of these facilities are being built to process and ship gas abroad, but at the cost of health, safety and wellbeing of local communities.”

Venture Global, a company which employed almost 6,000 for round-the-clock construction on the project, meanwhile, worked with parish leaders, starting a training program called Will to Skill, claiming that they are committed to “being a good neighbor” and “giving back to and investing in the communities” in which they operate. According to Louisiana Economic Development, the project will also support millions of dollars in new local revenue that is poised to have “widespread economic impact” and “improve lives in Plaquemines Parish.”

The plant is set to be completed by 2025 and is expected to meet all state and federal regulations.
