Maldivian Expands Fleet with Addition of Boeing B787-8 Aircraft

Male, Maldives - Island Aviation Services Ltd. (IAS), the operator of Maldivian national carrier, announced a call for proposals for a six-year lease of a Boeing B787-8 aircraft. Interested parties were invited to submit proposals in response to the RFP for dry leasing the aircraft.

Male Maldives - Island Aviation Services Ltd. (IAS), the operator of the Maldivian national carrier, initiated a call for proposals for the six-year lease of a Boeing B787-8 aircraft, as part of its strategic fleet expansion efforts.

In response to the Request for Proposal (RFP) issued by IAS, interested parties were invited to submit proposals for leasing the Boeing aircraft on a dry-lease basis.

The Boeing B787-8, belonging to the esteemed Boeing 787 Dreamliner series, is celebrated for its mid-size and long-range capabilities, making it ideal for extensive travel routes. With a standard seating capacity of 242 passengers, the aircraft prioritizes efficiency and passenger comfort.

Typically priced at around US$248.3 million for a new model, the monthly lease rates for a Boeing B787-8 aircraft ranged between US$800,000 and US$1.05 million in 2023, as reported by the International Bureau of Aviation (IBA).

Earlier this month, the government pledged financial support to facilitate the procurement process, extending necessary funds to IAS through existing financing channels available to the Ministry of Finance.

In a separate initiative, IAS recently issued a similar RFP for the five-year lease of an Airbus A330-200 aircraft on a dry lease basis. As part of the lease agreements, Maldivian, the national carrier, will acquire the air operator’s certificate (AOC) and aircraft registration for both aircraft, while undertaking operational responsibilities including crew management, insurance, fuel procurement, and maintenance costs.

IAS is concurrently exploring options for the sale of a DeHavilland DHC-8 aircraft, in line with its strategic fleet management objectives.

The current Maldivian fleet comprises two ATR72 aircraft, one ATR42 aircraft, one Airbus 320 aircraft, eight Dash8-300 series aircraft, two Dash8-200 series aircraft, and 11 DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft.

Previously, Maldivian operated an Airbus A321 aircraft, which was retired due to exorbitant maintenance expenses. Established in 2000, IAS operates as a wholly state-owned entity dedicated to advancing aviation services in The Maldives.
