Nature-focused retreat sees major upgrades to meet rising demand for eco-conscious accommodation in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal region.
Treehouse River Lodge, originally established more than 15 years ago, now offers a refreshed option for travelers seeking peaceful, eco-conscious accommodation near Durban. Located along the banks of the Sterkspruit River and a short drive from the Shongweni Farmers Market, the upgraded lodge combines tranquil seclusion with convenient access to urban areas.
-- A longtime boutique guesthouse in KwaZulu-Natal’s Shongweni Valley has reemerged as a modern nature retreat following an extensive renovation in 2025.Treehouse River Lodge now features four private chalets in three categories: two family-friendly self-catering river chalets, one couples’ river chalet, and a budget garden-view chalet. Each unit includes an en-suite bathroom, daily housekeeping, and access to amenities such as secure parking, a rock pool, and a riverside Boma dining area. The property is approximately 15 minutes from Hillcrest and 45 minutes from central Durban.
Founder and manager Susan Bakker said the renovation was inspired by a growing preference for small-scale, eco-conscious guesthouses in Durban’s surrounding areas. “We reimagined Treehouse River Lodge to give visitors a peaceful place to disconnect while staying connected to nature,” Bakker said. “We’re not trying to be a resort. We’re a riverside sanctuary designed for couples, families, and small groups who want meaningful rest.”
The lodge has begun working with local partners, including Hillcrest-based Kemayu Spa & Aesthetics, to offer discounted wellness services to guests. While there is no full-service restaurant on site, breakfast can be arranged in the Boma area, and private dinners are available by prior booking.
Bakker said she hopes the upgraded lodge will help bring greater visibility to Shongweni and its surroundings. “KwaZulu-Natal is full of hidden gems, and Shongweni is one of them. With Treehouse River Lodge, we aim to highlight this area’s riverine ecology, artisanal markets, and its proximity to the city,” she said.
The chalets are shaded by native trees and overlook the Sterkspruit River, where sightings of African clawless otters and fish eagles are possible. The property also attracts bird watchers, with the Western Barn Owl known to nest nearby.
Treehouse River Lodge joins a growing number of small-scale B&Bs in Durban prioritizing personalized stays and sustainability over high-volume tourism models. It adds to the region’s expanding list of guesthouses catering to travelers looking for meaningful, nature-based accommodation in South Africa.
