Lyme Disease & Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis Challenges & Treatments: New Report

As a physician and educator, Dr. Stanley Lang notes that Lyme disease is often referred to as 'the great imitator' because it can mimic the symptoms of several psychiatric conditions, like bipolar disorder. The neuroinflammation caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria can manifest as severe mood swings—a symptom of bipolar disorder, or cognitive impairments characteristic of schizophrenia.

The report discusses the challenges associated with the misdiagnosis of Lyme disease and cites a nationwide study that confirms the link between the disease and psychiatric conditions. Testing limitations, symptom overlap, and the lack of awareness in a clinical setting are the key challenges to be overcome.

"Chronic neuroinflammation and damage to the nervous system can result in long-term cognitive and emotional impairments," states Dr. Lang. "Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent these complications."

Dr. Lang recommends combining detailed medical histories, physical exams, neurological assessments, ELISA and Western blot blood testing, and neuroimaging studies to improve diagnostic accuracy.

Treatment strategies include the administration of amoxicillin, cefuroxime, doxycycline, and other oral or IV antibiotics. The psychiatric symptoms can be managed by a combination of counseling, psychotherapy, lifestyle modifications, mood stabilizers, antidepressants, and antipsychotics, explains Dr. Lang.

"If you suspect that Lyme disease may be contributing to psychiatric symptoms, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional who is knowledgeable about both Lyme disease and mental health," he continues. "A multidisciplinary approach involving infectious disease specialists, neurologists, and psychiatrists can provide comprehensive care."

Since 1978, Dr. Lang has been a family physician and researcher in holistic health treatments. He has developed the 'Shalom Method for Wholistic Health' and specializes in helping patients self-manage Lyme disease supported by medical advice.
