From Emergency to Opportunity

New report looks at impacts of COVID-19 on Alberta's nonprofit sector
and starts a new conversation around community prosperity

July 21, 2020 - TheNewswire - Calgary, Alberta - On Monday, July 20, the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations (CCVO) released their newest report: From Emergency to Opportunity: Building a Resilient Alberta Nonprofit Sector After COVID-19. In this report, CCVO combined recent research from across Canada with data from their own Alberta Nonprofit Survey (ANS), as well as lessons learned from other significant emergencies in Alberta history - the 2013 Calgary flood and the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire.

From Emergency to Opportunity addresses the numerous, detrimental impacts of COVID-19 on the nonprofit sector and the subsequent consequences for communities in Alberta. The report also identifies opportunities in which other sectors can work to build Alberta's community prosperity, including specific recommendations for the private sector, the provincial government, and foundations and other funders.

"The nonprofit sector has been deeply impacted by this pandemic. No single economic recovery plan will be enough," states Karen Ball, CCVO Interim President & CEO. "The Calgary flood and Fort McMurray wildfires have shown us that communities must collaboratively negotiate the recovery process - future prosperity will be built through strategies that involve government, the nonprofit sector, and the private sector to build our economic and our community prosperity."

From Emergency to Opportunity: Building a Resilient Alberta Nonprofit Sector After COVID-19 identifies:

  • - the four primary areas where nonprofits are expected to feel the most impact of the pandemic:

    1. 1.increased service demand without timely recognition and support;

    2. 2.decreased revenue;

    3. 3.diminished organizational capacity; and

    4. 4.transitioning technology and the impact of remote work.

  • - consequences of a weakened nonprofit sector, including closures of nonprofits and long-term impacts on those who rely on them - which often include women, people with disabilities, and children.

    - pertinent resources and tools focused on emergency planning and preparation for nonprofits to ensure business continuity.

    - the foundation for a new conversation about a collective community prosperity strategy, including specific recommendations for the private sector, government, and funders to support recovery in partnership with the nonprofit sector.

In Alberta, the nonprofit sector's economic activity is $10 billion in GDP contributions. In terms of employment, the sector employs nearly as many people as the manufacturing sector in Canada, and more people than the construction, agriculture, and forestry sectors. The social impact of nonprofits on the community is even greater than the economic impact, as they are a vital resource for communities and individuals. From Emergency to Opportunity begins a conversation that is considerate of the resiliency of the nonprofit sector and the value that it offers as leaders on the front lines of the current pandemic and leaders in collective recovery.
