The Metro New York Chapter of National Black MBA Association Presents Clarinetist Anthony McGill, the First African-American Principal Player of the New York Philharmonic and Associated Press Journalist Julie Walker in Conversation.

The Metro New York Chapter of National Black MBA Association invites its members nationwide to a free hour-long conversation between clarinetist Anthony McGill, the first African-American principal player of the New York Philharmonic, and award-winning Associated Press correspondent Julie Walker. The free event airs on Monday, January 18, 12 PM, on Zoom. To register please visit the event’s page.

Chuck Roberts, vice-president of operations of the Metro New York Chapter of the National Black MBA Association, will host the event and introduce the speakers.

In addition to his dynamic international solo and chamber music career, Anthony McGill is principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic—the first African-American principal player and third African-American musician (following Jerome Ashby, associate principal horn section, and violinist Sanford Allen) in the organization’s history. In 2020, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, one of classical music’s most significant awards given in recognition of soloists who represent the highest level of musical excellence. He performed at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, premiering a piece by John Williams with Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Gabriela Montero.

Through the course of their conversation, Walker and McGill will explore how he uses his platform as a leading classical virtuoso—who solos will top orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra– to advocate for social change. Last May, McGill launched #TakeTwoKnees, a powerful music protest campaign in response to the killing of George Floyd and historic racial injustice; hundreds of artists and citizens amplified and responded to the protest with their own videos using the hashtag #TakeTwoKnees. This past November, he performed “You Have the Right to Remain Silent,” by 2020 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Anthony Davis with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Louis Langrée conducting. The work is partially inspired by an experience Davis had when he was pulled over by the police and held at gunpoint for 45 minutes because he “matched the description” of a suspect fleeing a robbery.

Growing up on the south side of Chicago. Anthony’s parents, Ira Carol and Demarre McGill instilled a love of and appreciation for music and the arts within their two sons. It was Anthony McGill’s older brother, Demarre McGill, currently principal flute of the Seattle Symphony, who first inspired him to pursue the clarinet. Demarre and other classical musicians of color, including Yo-Yo Ma and conductor Michael Morgan, gave him the hope, vision, and capacity to pursue his path. Today, McGill not only strives to be an example of success to Black, brown, and multicultural musicians, he advocates for music education in underserved communities, and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in classical music. He is the artistic director of MAP, Juilliard’s Saturday program for intermediate and advanced music students, which actively seeks students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in the classical music field regardless of financial background.

Julie Walker is an award-winning radio, television, and print journalist. She is a correspondent for The Associated Press, working for the radio division and contributing to AP print. Julie can be heard on 1010 Wins Radio, where she contributes to news coverage and seen on Manhattan Neighborhood Network, where she is a fill-in host of the political show. She began her career in Paris as an ABC News intern and cut her teeth in New York City, working for NY1 News. Julie is a graduate of Wellesley College. She was the president of the New York Association of Black Journalists from 2016-2019.

Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character” (New York Times), clarinetist Anthony McGill is one of classical music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures. He enjoys a dynamic international solo and chamber music career, and he is the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic. As a chamber musician, McGill is a favorite collaborator of the Brentano, Daedalus, Guarneri, JACK, Miró, Pacifica, Shanghai, Takács, and Tokyo Quartets, as well as Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Gloria Chien, Yefim Bronfman, Gil Shaham, Midori, Mitsuko Uchida, and Lang Lang. He serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, and Bard College Conservatory of Music. He is the Artistic Director for the Music Advancement Program at The Juilliard School.
