About The Author
Richard Haase, author of the historical story "Prairie Soldier," has had a rich and varied life. He joined the National Guard in Benson, Minnesota, at the age of just 17, and two years later, in 1950, he was called up to serve in the Korean War. After training, he was hand-picked to fight in Korea. He arrived in the country as a member of the 7th Infantry Division, where he was assigned to a rifle company before being transferred to the Battalion S-2 Intelligence Section. Ultimately, he was the section sergeant for the Battalion.
Richard's book offers a personal account of the war and its impact on his life, both during and after his service. He saw first-hand the devastation and tragedy of the Korean War, which he maintains "accomplished nothing" and claimed the lives of 40,000 Americans and wounded more than 100,000. One of the most disastrous battles occurred at Chosin Reservoir near the Yalu River on China's Manchurian border, setting the scene for his book.
After serving a year in Korea, Richard returned home uninjured to a normal life on the Northern Prairie. He completed a degree in Civil Engineering and worked in construction while continuing to play an active role in managing a family farm operation. He married and has been happily married to his wife, Edna M. Haase, for 61 years. They have two children and three grandchildren.
Richard is an avid historian and has worked with various historical and Veterans Organizations, including The Center for Western Studies at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD. His heart has always returned to the land. His passion for history and storytelling shines through in his debut book, "Prairie Soldier."
