Yida Gao’s Venture Capital Firm, Shima Capital , Celebrate Announcement of Recognition

They were recently singled out as one of the most active funds in terms of deals made

Last month, blockchain news outlet The Block’s Digital Asset Funding Landscape was released and named Shima Capital one of the most active Web3 venture capital funds in the world in 2022. The rankings included the most respected funds in the industry, and measured prolificness by deal volume.

Shima Capital, founded in 2021 by Yida Gao (Forbes 30 Under 30), is swiftly approaching 200-lifetime deals, more than half of which were made in 2022 which found them alongside other such luminary venture capital funds as Animoca Brands, Jump Capital, and Big Brain Holdings.

Shima Capital was officially introduced to the world in August of 2022 through a fund launch announcement in Blockworks. The news was also picked up by Cointelegraph and Coindesk. Leading by example, Yida Gao, who is also Managing General Partner at the firm, the Shima team has become known for the integrity they show when dealing with not only their own portfolio companies, but with vendors, contractors, and even other funds in their industry.

Yida Gao and his team at Shima Capital have identified several diverse verticals to invest in, inclusive of decentralized finance (DeFi), regenerative finance (ReFi), blockchain gaming, cross-chain infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI), to name a few. Gaming takes up around 30% of Shima’s portfolio, holding the largest percentage amongst all verticals.

What really separates Shima Capital from their contemporaries is the additional value the team brings to portfolio companies in terms of introductions to trusted vendors and regular advisory conversations. Going above and being as an organization has been by design, a reflection on the character of Shima’s founder, Yida Gao.

When he founded his firm almost two years ago, Yida's investment strategy was to back great founders. This has been his philosophy throughout 2022 and there is no doubt that this will continue to be his approach in 2023 and beyond.

At the time of his firm’s launch, Yida Gao said, “We see a pocket of opportunity that’s missing in the capital stack for Web3 in being the first institutional capital in the pre-seed.” He continued, “We’re trying to be the missing layer in Web3.”

They’ve certainly proven to be the missing layer not only for Web3 but for their portfolio companies who are incredibly thankful to be in business with a venture capital fund that is sure to obtain even more recognition as the years go on.
